Thursday 27 mars 2025 – 8pm at Institut finlandais

The contemporary classical music workshop Creative Dialogue stands as a dynamic and transformative platform forged through the friendship of three influential Finns: cellist Anssi Karttunen and composers Magnus Lindberg and Kaija Saariaho.

Creative Dialogue is their unique way of sharing with younger colleagues their vast experience in musical dialogue. Through trust, friendship and a shared dedication to their craft, composers and performers have always inspired each other and helped each other to new heights of creativity. Creative Dialogue is a profound way of communication – one that transcends words and is embodied in music.

The workshop, deeply rooted in the landscapes of both France and Finland, has its homes at Château de Beauchêne in the Loire Valley and at Wanantaka Manor outside Helsinki, and draws inspiration from the musical heritage of the North as well as the richness of French culture

Presenting a world premiere and Parisian premieres, and musical improvisation, this event brings together many generations of artists who have contributed to Creative Dialogue over the years. Welcome to Institut finlandais on 27 March 2025 to experience a microscopic view into the moment of creation, where art, nature, and human experience intertwine to reveal new paths forward.

About Creative Dialogue: bringing young performers and composers as close as possible to the moment of creation

Anssi Karttunen, Magnus Lindberg, and Kaija Saariaho launched Creative Dialogue in 2007 in collaboration with the Sibelius Academy. In 2022, they were joined by their close friend Julian Anderson. The initiative aims to inspire young performers and composers to engage in a mutually beneficial dialogue, enriching not only themselves but also the broader music community.

During the workshop, the participating composers bring sketches that are refined collaboratively with the performing participants, who also delve into repertoire pieces by composers connected to Creative Dialogue. Improvisation workshops involve all participants.

Together they confront technical, artistic, and emotional challenges under the guidance of the faculty, who serve as mentors rather than traditional teachers. Every workshop features an alternating instrument in addition to strings.

Participants are invited by recommendation of teachers from around the world, the aim being to reach individuals who may not yet realize the transformative potential of creative dialogue. These artists often find their musical horizons expanded, leading to many new lasting collaborations.
