Mielensäpahoittajan rakkaustarina by Mika Kaurismäki (2024)
VOSTFR, 98′
Shot on beautiful summer days near Helsinki, Mika Kaurismäki’s latest film Mielensäpahoittajan rakkaustarina is the story of a grumpy old man who believes everything was better before and resists change. Adapted from Tuomas Kyrö’s novels, this delightful comedy shows us that freedom and happiness don’t belong to the young, that life is full of surprises and that love can be found when you least expect it!
Mielensäpahoittajan rakkaustarina is the 31st film by Mika Kaurismäki, an eclectic director who alternates between fiction and documentaries. With his brother Aki Kaurismäki, he founded the Midnight Sun Film Festival in Sodankylä, which has been held every June for the past 40 years in Finland, north of the Arctic Circle.
Sunday 28 September at 8pm
Orenda by Pirjo Honkasalo (2025)
VOSTFR, 118′
Orenda is about the encounter between two determined women, played by Alma Pöysti and Pirkko Saisio. In the language of the North American Iroquois, orenda means an invisible force, a spirit of life that inhabits the living and the inert: people, wind, birds, rabbits, stones. Exploring themes of guilt and grace, the destinies of the two women intertwine in an intense emotional thriller set on a remote island.
Pirjo Honkasalo is a cinematographer, screenwriter, and director. She has been making films since the 1970s. Honkasalo is best known for her documentaries, notably The 3 Rooms of Melancholia (2004), which won an award at the Venice Film Festival and brought her international acclaim.
