Design and craft boutique at Institut finlandais
From 4 October to 21 December 2024, discover our new collection of sustainable, handmade Finnish art, craft and design at Institut finlandais. Curated by Katja Hagelstam, the collection Between Earth and Sky with Lokal Gallery showcases the work of eleven contemporary designers through ceramic, wood and glass pieces, as well as sustainable household linen by Lapuan Kankurit.
Located in the Punavuori district in the heart of Helsinki, Lokal Gallery merges art, craft and sustainability. Each piece reflects the harmony of nature in its essence, material and design, such as Tiia Anttila’s delicious ceramic fruits, Julia Töyrylä’s delicate glass spoons or Lapuan Kankurit & minä perhonen’s warm Metsälampi merino wool blanket, which evokes the moving surface of a forest pond.
Katja Hagelstam, the curator of this collection, is a photographer and founder of Lokal Gallery. As a freelance photographer, Katja has worked for numerous magazines and books, particularly in the fields of art, design, interior design, gastronomy and lifestyle, which has allowed her to develop her own artistic vision and approach.
Inspired, she decided to create a space to showcase the handmade pieces of young Finnish artists, craftspeople and designers and opened Lokal in April 2012. Different from often intimidating art galleries, Katja’s idea was to create a cosy, home-like environment where art becomes interactive, accessible and sustainable, embodied in everyday pieces that can be passed down from generation to generation. A true platform for established and emerging artists, Lokal received the Finnish Design Deed Award in 2015 and the Finnish State Design Award in 2017.
As part of Institut finlandais’ autumn programme Between Earth and Sky, this collection is on display and on sale until 21 December 2024, in parallel with the Beyond the Horizon exhibition.
