Katy Hertell is a Helsinki-based ceramic artist and sculptor. After spending much of the 1980s attending numerous art courses and experimenting with various materials such as wood, stone, Siporex and concrete, she identified clay as her medium in the 1990s and has worked with the material ever since. Hertell gains inspiration from Eastern and Greek mythology, the animal world, children and nature for her hand-built sculptures in stoneware that can be used as pots or bowls, blurring the line between art and functionalism. The unpredictable nature of clay as a material plays an important role for the ceramist, who welcomes and finds meaning in the unexpected details.
